Cat Calabrese | Quicksand (debut single)

Cleveland-based pop artist Cat Calabrese officially launches her solo music career with her stunning debut single, "Quicksand." Three cranks of a music box and the sound of distant chimes give way to the upbeat, summery notes of "Quicksand," adorned with Cat's expressive, soulful vocals that glide atop percussive undertones which establish the vibe of this outstanding track.

With production by Wavy Duder (co-producer of Machine Gun Kelly's latest album Tickets To My Downfall) and DJ London Bridges, "Quicksand" firmly establishes Cat Calabrese as a powerful solo presence in the indie pop arena, where she cultivates a pop sound that represents herself not only as a singer-songwriter, but as a woman ready to tell her own story in her own words.

Readers of SoundThead Music Blog may recognize Cat Calabrese as the former lead vocalist of indie pop band, Rule of Young, whose singles, "Surrender" and "Lie Better" caught my ear back in 2019. I was immediately taken by Cat's vocals in those songs. It's exciting that we'll be hearing more of her incredible voice and songwriting skills in her new solo career.

With lyrics that admonish a toxic ex-boyfriend, "Quicksand" was inspired by the idea of being able to revisit the crossroads in a former relationship and tell a partner goodbye after seeing red flags, rather than ignoring and enduring the future inevitable heartbreak. The song's powerful message and dance-worthy beat are delivered by a stronger, more self-assured Cat who refuses to sink in to her ex's quicksand.

Cat also continues to work with her band’s former producer, Jim Wirt. Jim is a 15x platinum and Emmy award winning producer who is best known for producing artists such as Incubus, Gwen Stefani, Fiona Apple, Something Corporate, and Jack's Mannequin. Through Jim’s innovation, Cat is able to separate herself from the indie pop/alternative sound that her band was known for, and develop the pop sound she always aspired to create: songs full of memorable hooks and driving bass lines coupled with lyrical storytelling.

Cat currently has five additional songs that will be released throughout 2021 and is continuing to write and work on new music daily, all the while balancing her full-time career in accounting. You will also be hearing from her on several features/collaborations that will be released this year.

With that, we leave you with a video preview for "Quicksand," directed and edited by Owen Zubek, and featuring Cat Calabrese.
