What do you get when you take one member each from four groundbreaking and influential indie bands of the Nineties? You get Piroshka - the superb new indie supergroup comprised of Miki Berenyi (Lush), KJ 'Moose' McKillop (Moose), Mick Conroy (Modern English) and Justin Welch (Elastica).
The name "Piroshka" is Hungarian for Little Red Riding Hood and also gives a subtle nod to a certain band member's red hairdo that was prominent in the 1990's Britpop scene. The band's debut single, "Everlastingly Yours", is a fresh and intoxicating (re)entry into the indie scene. The songwriting and production is solid, and it's thrilling to hear Miki's distinctive voice sounding as vibrant and fresh as it did during Lush's heyday. It was only recently (2016) that we heard the first new music from Lush (Blind Spot EP) in nearly 20 years.
Piroshka's debut album, Brickbat, is due for release in February 2019 on Bella Union Records. According to the Bella Union website, "The album is named after the word for a missile, which nails the record’s heavyweight lyrics if not the music’s gorgeous, bittersweet and euphoric pop." My album pre-order is in and I'm seriously excited to hear the full-length album!
Equally as beautiful as the song itself is the colorful, accompanying lyric video for "Everlastingly Yours", directed by Martin Andersen and Chris Bigg. We've recently seen some stunning visuals from these two iconic names in the design world with their stunning artwork and music videos for The Breeders "Wait in the Car" and Geniuser "Monkey".
