Erudite Stoner (debut album)

Erudite Stoner is the instrumental musical project of Brazilian composer and classical guitarist Matheus Novaes. His stunning, self-titled debut album is one of the most refreshing listens I've taken in recently - this is music for the ears, mind and soul that will transport you to another time and place, where the weight of the world seems to lift from your shoulders, the further you wander into Erudite Stoner's captivating musical landscape. Erudite Stoner's Bandcamp page notes: "Recommended if you like: Slowdive, Alcest, Red House Painters, Sun Kil Moon, Popul Vuh, Nick Drake." And I think that's a pretty accurate indicator of potential, target audience - personally backed up by the fact that I'm a fan of several of these bands/musicians.

At the heart of the nine tracks is Matheus' intricate and unique style of contemplative, classical acoustic guitar, with influences of post-modern and indie rock. I can remember my first listen to the album, after having just completed two classes in fingerstyle acoustic guitar, thinking about how brilliant, well-structured, and beautifully-played these songs sounded. There's clearly an incredible level of talent and creativity in the presentation and composition of these songs. The more I listened, the more I was drawn into the atmosphere and flow of the album. I'm not convinced I can do proper poetic justice to describing how excellent this album is, so it's probably best to have a listen for yourself:

While all the tracks are outstanding, my personal favorites are "Ride to Nowhere", "There Is No Home", and the warm and gentle closing track, "Left Behind." The album was originally self-released in 2015 in digital format only, but is now also available in digipack CD format through Thrill Jockey Records (US) and Debemur Morti (Europe).

In addition to the album itself, also watch Erudite Stoner's official video for "There Is No Home" below to take in the artful and captivating visuals that accompany this standout album track.
