Today, we're heading across the Atlantic to the town of Gothenburg, Sweden, for the music of singer-songwriter Marcus Alexander, who is about to release his forthcoming debut album, Journey, on March 25. I first discovered Marcus' music last year when I heard his impressive, original composition "Supernova" on Spotify. This song alone was enough for me to make a mental note to keep check on new music from this emerging, talented singer-songwriter.
Marcus comes from a family of musicians, started playing piano at an early age, and picked up playing the guitar at the age of 14. It was only in 2013 that he decided to pursue a full-time career in music. His original acoustic indie-folk compositions are refreshing, honest and unpretentious, with a heartfelt, raw, yet gentle vocal style that nicely complements the charming musical atmosphere he creates.
Leading up to the official release of Journey, Marcus is releasing one new song from the album every Sunday. At the time of writing, two new songs are already available for streaming. The first track, "Black and White," is contemplative and hopeful with a delicate fingerstyle guitar arrangement ("And now a new fire is burning and bright | Let it burn at the wrong in the right | At least now you're black and white"):
Leading off with a catchy guitar riff reminiscent of Iggy Pop's "The Passenger", the album's second teaser, "A Silent Promenade," is upbeat, melodic and catchy, featuring lovely guest vocals from fellow Swedish singer-songwriter Hannie.
Until the official release of Journey in a few weeks, be sure to check Marcus' Facebook and Instagram pages each Sunday for links to additional songs from the album.
