Join the Riot | Echo (new EP)

If you're thinking this one's about heavy metal, think again. Instead, envision energetic and melodic indie pop from an emerging band that draws inspiration from artists like Phoenix, early Coldplay, and Empire of the Sun. Swedish indie band Join the Riot celebrates the new year with the release of their brilliant new Echo EP, which contains the single "Pretenders" that has already been picked up by several Spotify indie playlists, and has garnished significant rotation on Swedish Radio.

Join the Riot hails from Stockholm, Sweden and consists of schoolmates Henrik Ljungqvist (vocals), Jonas Engdahl (bass), Simon Santunione (drums), Andre Sund (guitar), and Patrik Berg-Almkvisth (keys). The band members started playing together in 2013 with a vision to make great pop and rock music. In just the past four years, Join the Riot has released a debut album, an EP and several singles, including one track ("Wow") that was featured in a commercial for Volkswagen Scandinavia.

The EP's opening track, "Fantasies," presents a pulsing synth/electronic sound that sets the stage for the songs that follow. "Pretenders" is top-notch single material - immediately catching your ear with its killer bass riff, melodic verses and infectious chorus. The EP has a polished, clean sound throughout - these guys are clearly talented songwriters and musicians. "Echo" and "X My Heart" are both stunning ballad-like tracks that each present a lovely, acoustic-driven atmosphere, making them definite standouts on the EP. "Bonsoir" gradually rebuilds the pace and energy, with its infectious arena-pop chorus that's sure to have you singing along - an excellent track to close out this outstanding EP. We're pretty convinced it's a matter of time before this up-and-coming band begins to pick up even more listener momentum and incite everyone to join the riot!
