Thompson Springs | Graffiti Rose (video premiere)
Madison/Chicago-based, indie band Thompson Springs is about to release their new EP, Fond Regards - the first new music from the band since their impressive 2016 debut release, Artifacts. Thompson Springs is the musical project of singer-songwriter Matt Smith (vocals, guitars), along with Jacob Bicknase (drums, percussion), and Andy Goitia (bass).
Promptly following the first single release ("Maybe We Be Dreamin'") from Fond Regards, SoundThread Music Blog has teamed up with the band to premiere the official music video for the EP's second single, the psychedelic and moody "Graffiti Rose." Matt's subdued, yet expressive vocals perfectly complement the slow-building, trippy atmosphere that the song radiates. The track was mixed by Ariel Loh, includes Jacob Bicknase on drums, Eric Miller on cello, with impressive contributions from Pat Sansone (Wilco) who played bass, farfisa organ, synth, shakers, and mellotron.
Regarding the theme of "Graffiti Rose," Thompson Spring's Matt Smith comments to SoundThread: "The song and lyrics have a distressful feel, similar to being around someone and not knowing what they're thinking, a situation I recently found myself in." Matt also remarks on the contributions from Wilco's Pat Sansone, "Pat Sansone added so much to the track, with little direction from us. Quite amazing actually."
The music video for "Graffiti Rose" nicely ties together video clips from old, vintage films with the psychedelic music. Matt explains, "A while back I found some old footage that my grandma took in 1950's America and Europe. This was right after WWII, and you can still feel the tension in the Europe scenes. She took a boat across the Atlantic. Imagine that today with our short attention spans. My friend Aaron Gochburg edited the film clips and tripped them out a bit to fit the music."
Watch the music video premiere for "Graffiti Rose" below, and keep an eye out for upcoming Thompson Springs performances, as the band soon embarks on their US Tour (August/September, 2017).
