Bristol-based indie singer-songwriter Fenne Lily's debut album, On Hold, is one of those gorgeous, rare musical masterpieces that I could seriously listen to for hours on end. A thing of genuine musical beauty, the ten delicate and personal stories on this album speak directly to your soul and lightly tug at your heart strings. At the forefront, you'll immediately discover unpretentious and genuine songwriting adorned with Fenne's soft, smoky and velvety vocals and outstanding acoustic guitar accompaniments. From a listener perspective, I feel like I shed some unnecessary weight or burden every time I take the On Hold musical journey with Fenne. There's definitely something cathartic and liberating about this album.
In the sleeve notes to On Hold, Fenne notes that the album was written almost entirely on her bed "about days & nights spent & wasted with people I let in before they let me down or let me go." This authenticity and vulnerability comes shining through and is perfectly complemented by the album's "less is more" production vibe.
I'm not even going to bother pointing out highlight songs, because I really think that each track is as strong, unique and enjoyable as the next. I've included the audio links to the album for you to listen for yourself, along with Fenne's most recent video to her single and title track "On Hold" that adds a bit of visual to the listening experience. For any vinyl lovers out there, initial copies of On Hold are pressed on stunning yellow vinyl (some still available!).
Based on this stunning debut release, I believe we're all going to hopefully be hearing a lot more music from this emerging and promising songwriter!
