Mere Child | Better (acoustic version)

Photo of Mere Child

Nearly one year ago, Brighton-based singer-songwriter Mere Child (a.k.a. Aimee Herbert-Smith) released her stunning debut single "Not Good Enough." Last week, on her Facebook page, Mere Child graced us with a gorgeous acoustic version of a new song called "Better." Having just written down these two song titles, I must note that neither literal title (i.e., "not good enough", "better") gives proper justice to the brilliant songwriting and captivating performance that Mere Child delivers - they are both "outstanding".

My first listen to "Better" blew me away. With nothing but soft, elegant, acoustic fingerstyle guitar, beautiful melody and Aimee's soothing, emotive voice, this song firmly and exquisitely stands on its own. The honest, heartfelt lyrics reflect on vulnerability and the internal desire to be better ("When I get over myself | I'll be a better mother | I'll be a better lover | I'll be a better friend | I'm just sorry I've not been there") while emotionally struggling with one's internal measure of self-worth ("They say that fortune favors the brave | But I don't qualify").

Have a watch and listen to this beautiful song and its touching live performance. We can't wait for more new music from this talented, emerging artist.
